During the season, games between the Hearters and various counterparts are in contest for not only competition points, but an array of shields, plates, cups, and other trinkets.
The AB Shield
The Anthony Burnell Shield is the prize for the winning side when SHCC side play South Yarra Cricket Club. Anthony Burnell was the Captain of SYCC C Grade when he was tragically killed in a single motor vehicle accident in 2000. The shield was created as a mark of respect to AB and the Yarra's. The shield is on offer to the victor whenever the Hearters meet the Yarras.
A brief History of the Contests for the AB Shield:
2007/8: Lost by B-grade. The AB Shield is off to Como Treasury again...
2006/7: Retained by C-grade with 2 wins.
2005/6: Two strong wins by A-grade. The AB Shield is back in Fawkner Park…
2004/5: Lost by C-grade with 2 losses. The AB Shield is off to Como Treasury…
2003/4: No contests between the Yarras and the Hearters.
2002/3: Late season A-grade victory. The Shield comes to the Park…
The Friendship Shield (aka The Pumper O'Neil Memorial Shield)
This shield is vied for every game between Sacred Heart CC and our Fawkner Park contemporaries, Gunbower United CC. The Gunners have been our favorite opposition for many years with several memorable games between us in our history.
A brief History of the Contests between the Hearters and the Gunners:
2008/9: Retained by the B's in Round 4 with the help of an amazing innings on debut by Pumper Medalist Mal Duckett.
2007/8: Lost it late last year when C-Sunday were defeated. But won back with a strong win late in the season. Well done Cs!
2006/7: Only contested once in D-Grade in a memorable match marred by ‘ineligible’ players representing both sides. The game was won outright in the last over by the Hearters with Pat Wickham dismissed to a Christensen one handed.
2005/6: This season saw the shield up for grabs in the very first round, however, we were poleaxed. We didn't meet again until the very last game of the season, the Grand Final, and if you're unaware what happened in that game, it should be obvious by the fact that we now house the Friendship Shield.
2004/5: Played early in the season with a win to the Hearters followed by a late season loss. The Shield crosses the park to the Gunbower rooms….
2003/4: A tie initially had the Friendship Shield staying put but a late season loss saw the shield in the Gunbower Rooms.
2002/3: An early season win to the Hearters is brought undone by a late season loss… A short taste of the Shield in 2002/3…
2001/2: A win to the Hearters followed by a loss to the Gunners later in the season.
2000/1: Two strong wins for the Hearters sees the Friendship Shield displayed proudly on the Trophy Shelf.
1999/2000: Twas the first match the Hearters lost after an 4 game unbeaten streak to commence the Hearters MCA history. The Inaugural Friendship Shield goes to Gunbower.
The Knight Shield (aka The Hate Plate)
This charming piece of plastic-ware is awarded to the winner of the new mid week 20/20 game between our friends, The Gunners. The inaugural match was played shortly after the Christmas break 2005 on a balmy Wednesday evening, and, well, we thrashed 'em! The writing on the plate has since eroded as it was probably used to hold some snags from the GreggoBurner, or used to water the dogs at some stage or other. No doubt soon to be again contested.
2008/09: The Gunners destroyed the gallant Hearters on the 17th of Dec. 2008... Our friends the Gunners again possess the Hate Plate.
The HeartBurn Cup
This little gem, sponsored by Quickeze (not really) is another new advent in the 20/20 cricketing realm, and played for against our other good MCA mates, Burnley CC. This year was the inaugural match, again played on a balmy Wednesday evening, and guess what? We thrashed 'em! Thanks to a Herculean knock by possibly the biggest hitting batsmen in the MCA, Paul 'Big Ships' Graham. Something in the vicinity of 54 runs off 18 or 19 deliveries. A splendid evening ensued and some of the Burners put in efforts sustaining til the wee hours. Club caps were exchanged, along with plaudits for respective clubs, and thanks to Pebbles, we now have the real deal hanging in our rooms. Magnanimous gesture. Has not been contested since the inaugural match. The trophy has been lost or deliberately binned as it was a very tacky figurine.
The Mayors Shield
The Mayors Shield is the hotly contested prize between SHCC and those matting mates, Emerald Hill CC. Always a great day/evening, especially with the great rapport between the two sides. A supreme BBQ usually follows the contest.
A brief history of the contests for the Mayors Shield between the SHCC and the EHCC:
2007/8: Played as a 20/20 game which the Hearters won in somewhat controversial conditions as the Hillers’ batting 10 requested that at a late arriving 11th bat be allowed to the wicket with nine runs to win. The home sides decree was that it was getting dark and beer was required and we were already walking off so bad luck. The spirit of cricket was alive and well on FP (whatever that synthetic next to Paisley St’s number is)!
2005/6: Played at Albert Park 1 and the Hearters were soundly beaten. Memorable for gay pride march and Chris Nuck making his first fifty for the club and taking out the Man of Match in a losing side. The Hillers have the Shield.
2002/3: Hillers dished out a belting to an under strength SHCC side… The less said…
2001/02: A memorable game on Cordner played in the 20-20-20-20 format with the Hearters comfortably home on the backs of 50’s to Greg Hirtzel and Ross Eldershaw. The Hearters obtain the Mayors Shield.
The Lane - Evans Memorial Trophy
The nomenclature of this particular prize is somewhat baffling. It's named after Mark Lane, a former Coles-Myer player and captain, who became a Hearter for a season or two, then went back to Coles-Myer, and our Flounder, Jason 'Evo' Evans. What is not exactly right about it is that memorial trophies are usually named after folks that have passed on and gone to cricket Nirvana, yet, to the chagrin of some, neither are departed (although Evo went close in Chittagong). Either way, we haven't played Coles-Myer for a good 4-5 seasons now, so this curious relic sits atop fridge, and holds mostly 5c pieces and odd keys. This trophy has also since vanished.
A brief history of the contests between SHCC and Coles-Myer:
2007/8: A win to the Coles-Myer Sharks late in the season followed by another strong win in the Semi-final. Lane-Evans Trophy to the Sharks...
2002/3: A win to the Hearters. Hearters win trophy.
2001/2: Two losses to Coles… Coles have trophy.
